Perception des patients sur la pratique de leur médecin traitant par rapport au visiteur médical en cabinet de médecine générale : étude qualitative réalisée à Gabarret (Landes) sur 13 patients

Abstract : Introduction: meetings between health professionals and pharmaceutical sales representatives are proven to influence physicians and their prescriptions. If practitioners are debating whether to receive pharmaceutical representatives, perhaps patients' opinions can help them decide. Their opinion is rarely looked for, even though they are the ones most affected by the consequences of this influence. Method: this study explores patients' perceptions of their physician's practice regarding pharmaceutical sales representatives, in general practice, through semi-structured interviews. Result: patients know little about the role of pharmaceutical sales representatives and even less about their link with pharmaceutical companies. They are well aware that pharmaceutical sales representatives try to influence health professionals during visits. However, they have total confidence in their physician to resist this influence and maintain neutrality in order to preserve the patients' well-being. They are unaware of their physician's practice in relation to the pharmaceutical sales representatives. They do not know whether they meet them or not. They are divided in their preference as to their physician's practice. They are also divided on whether they want to be consulted by their physician to decide whether to meet representatives. However, they agree that the physician's practice towards pharmaceutical sales representatives does not change the physician-patient relationship. Discussion-conclusion: patients do not feel involved with regard to pharmaceutical sales representatives. For them, the physician is the intermediary and it does not seem necessary for them to be informed. Even if they are the ones impacted by the consequences of the influence on prescriptions, they do not realise the stakes of the representatives' visits. If the obvious lack of information on this subject means that patients cannot give a fully informed opinion on their physician's practice, feeling this gap appears relevant.
