Intoxications accidentelles au cannabis des enfants de moins de 11 ans en France de 2018 à 2019 : étude rétrospective

Abstract : Introduction: as a consequence of the cannabis consumption evolution in France, the number and severity of accidental cannabis intoxications in children have been steadily increasing. This tendency has been shown by Chartier et al., who focused on cases reported by French Poison Control centers between 2010 and 2017. The objective of the study is to analyse the evolution of prevalence and severity of pediatric cannabis intoxications in France in 2018 and 2019 and to compare it to Chartier et al. results. Methods: this is a retrospective, multi-centered cohort study that analyses cannabis intoxication cases of children under 11 years old, recorded following a call to French Poison Centers between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2019. To make the data comparable, the same severity criteria as the Chartier et al. study were chosen, which were Poisoning Severity Score ≥ 2, admission to intensive care or ressuscitation unit, coma and respiratory depression. Results: we identified 161 cases in 2018 and 147 cases in 2019, for a total of 308 cases. 363 cases had been recorded over the period 2016-2017 in the Chartier et al. study. 50.6 % of our patients had a PSS = 2 and 24.4 % were admitted to intensive care showing a significant increase compared to the 2015-2017 period studied by Chartier et al. The rates of PSS = 3 (11.4 %), coma (7.5 %), respiratory depression (8.1 %) did not differ significantly from the data of Chartier et al. Conclusion: we found a slight decrease in the number of cases of pediatric cannabis intoxication, and a stability of their severity. The stability of the consumers population and of the THC level in cannabis resin since 2017, as well as a more and more marked attraction from consumers for herb form rather than resin form may explain those observations.
