Connaissances des adolescents sur les infections sexuellement transmissibles : enquête dans cinq lycées des Hauts-de-Seine

Abstract : Background: despite efficient prevention methods and accessible screening tests, the prevalence of certain sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) is increasing amongst adolescents in France. The main goal of this study is to assess their knowledge about STDs.
Methods: in this multicentre observational study, students of Hauts-de-Seine have completed a 22-item questionnaire.
Results: 680 adolescents aged 14 to 20 years (mean [+/-SD] age, 15.9 +/- 1,0 years) were included. Many of them didn’t know their immunization status against human papilloma virus (46%) and hepatitis B virus (62%). Regarding information sources, only 18% had ever discussed about sexuality with a physician and 78% had already have at least one sex education session at school. More than a half didn’t know hepatitis B, syphilis, chlamydia, herpes simplex virus and gonococcus infections were STDs and 14% thought that “withdrawal” prevents STDs. Concerning HIV, knowledge was quite satisfactory but there are still misconceptions. 20% of teenagers thought a person can be contaminated after being bitten by a mosquito and 11% thought HIV-positive people are treated with one-off medication. Adolescents considered condom as a major method of preventing STDs and 86 % of them emphasized the importance of screening tests before stopping using it.
Conclusion: knowledge on STDs are still too limited amongst teenagers. Building better sexual health education programs, in terms of public health and at an individual level, and an enhanced appropriation of the digital space seem to be necessary.
