Les Cinquante poèmes d'Izumi Shikibu : l'absence comme matière poétique

Abstract : The Fifty Poems of Izumi Shikibu (Xth-XIth century) is a set of forty-six Japanese poems (waka), divided in five sections corresponding to different time of a day spent by the poet mourning her dead lover, presumed to be the imperial prince Atsumichi (981-1007). The existing studies focus mostly on how the poet experienced the loss of a loved one but here, without neglecting this aspect, I chose to study the way Absence is poetically represented. This master thesis thus strives to show that, as much as the death of a loved one, the search for poetic innovation lies at the heart of this work full of originality and complexity. Part One of the present thesis is dedicated to a study of the observance of literary conventions in this poetic sequence through a survey of the transtextual references in the Fifty Poems and also through a comparison between the latter and both Izumi Shikibu’s other mourning poems and the mourning poems in the Kokin Waka Shū (905) , the major poetic anthology of that time. Part Two analyses the spatiality and temporality of Absence in the Fifty poems and establishes similarities with spatiality and temporality in love poems (kohi no uta). Part Three examines the relation between the Fifty Poems and Boredom (Tsuredzure), the latter constituting here as much a creation context as a creation subject.
