Pourquoi et comment utiliser le végétal dans la construction du paysage de l'espace public à La Réunion ? Cas d'étude du quartier de Bois de Nèfles, Saint-Paul

Abstract : The Réunion island offers a wide range of natural conditions for plants to thrive. No wonder multiple visions upon plants rise and face each other, hence revealing its powerful potential in bringing different issues together. On the other hand, increasing suburban sprawl, revealing current societal changes occurring on the island, threatens the social cohesion of aforementioned urban communities. Accordingly, the departmental governance body of La Réunion launched a plantation plan of a million trees, to be conducted both in natural areas as well as urban neighborhoods with the sub-plan “Bwa de kartié”. Planting in public space is only successful given one grasps the meaning of plants and their characteristics locally. While being asked for technical advices on this regard, the CAUE of La Réunion, association advocating for architecture and landscape quality, offered to coordinate consultation sessions in Bois de Nèfles, Saint-Paul. The “Alon Kozé” event has been an opportunity to approach citizens, understand their relationship with plants and discuss possible solutions on local issues. The thesis method draws on those sessions, with the input of literature review, field observations and informal interviews. It then addresses the values given to plants and their role in defining La Réunion landscape, both physically and as perceived by people. The event showed to be a call-to-action, therefore this thesis seeks to demonstrate how plants in public space can help build a local sense of place in Bois de Nèfles neighborhood.
