Traductions françaises d'ouvrages de sociologie chinois, parus en France entre 2009 et 2020

Abstract : Almost two decades have passed since China set up its outward translation grant policy to strengthen the international dissemination of its culture. There is every reason to examine its real outward translation flows to know how effective this policy has been.
The objectives of this study are to assess the strength of the flow of French translations of Chinese sociological works published in France between 2009 and 2020, to highlight the obstacles and favourable conditions for the dissemination of Chinese sociological works in France during the same period, and to reveal the role played by publishers and translators in the selection, translation and promotion processes of the works.
Following the theoretical framework of the sociology of translation, the study combines macro-sociological and micro-sociological levels of analysis. It uses quantitative and qualitative methods of data analysis, documentary research, textual analysis and interviews.
The results show that the flow of French translations of Chinese sociological works published in France between 2009 and 2020 is still relatively weak but shows clear improvements as compared with the period 1949-2008. Obstacles to disseminating Chinese sociological works in France between 2009 and 2020 include the different positions occupied by Chinese and French in the global translation market, the marginal place of Chinese sociology in the disciplinary field, and the slump in humanities and social science publishing in France. Favourable conditions include the accelerated deployment of China’s outward translation grant policy, the post-Western turn in the sociological discipline, and the active engagement of a cohort of independent French publishers in the humanities and social sciences. Publishers commonly use partial translation and peritexts to make books more accessible and attractive to the French public. As for translation strategies, they vary considerably depending on the profile of the translator.
