Enquête de pratique sur la prévention des fragilités osseuses secondaires des enfants et adolescents polyhandicapés en Normandie

Abstract : Introduction: Secondary bone fragility is characterized by a decrease in bone mass, sometimes associated with abnormalities in bone architecture. It increases the risk of fracture. Children with multiple disabilities are particularly at risk. Methods: We carried out a practice survey (cross-sectional descriptive study) from February to May 2021, in order to assess the knowledge on bone fragility, and its prevention, of medical and non-medical personnel supporting polyhandicapped children in Normandy. Results: Secondary bone fragility and the National Diagnostic and Care Protocol were known to 58% and 61% of professionals respectively. Risk factors and preventive measures (in particular verticalization) are little known to medical professionals. Only 1/3 of the doctors implement calcium and vitamin D supplementation. The participation rate of non-medical professionals was very low (12 responses) and does not allow conclusions to be drawn. Conclusion: The secondary bone fragility of children with multiple disabilities is unknown by the doctors taking them in charge. This study made it possible to disseminate the latest recommendations on the prevention of bone fragility in this population, with an emphasis on loading and verticalization, which remains one of the main points.
