Soigner les femmes ? Les mutilations génitales féminines dans l'Angleterre du XIXe siècle

Abstract : This thesis explores female genital mutilations which were practiced in the context of nineteenth century England and the moralizing outlook on sexuality it could convey. An unusual expression of their sexuality in women was often seen as pathological and a sign of hysteria. There were many treatments that were used to try to cure this disease, but they were not always in the interest of women. With the development of medical techniques, surgical operations became more reliable, and while some doctors such as Isaac Baker Brown thought they were healing their patients through the operation of clitoridectomy, they were sometimes accomplices or even instigators of their mutilation at the same time.
