Évaluation de la courbe d'apprentissage du bloc des érecteurs du rachis (ESP Block) : étude prospective observationnelle monocentrique

Abstract : Purpose: the number of indications for the recently discovered erector spinae plane block (ESP Block) procedure has significantly expanded during the last several years in specialty areas such as thoracic, cardiac and neurosurgery. The purpose of this study is to determine the learning curve of this applied locoregional anaesthesia technique. Type of study: prospective, observational, and single-centre. Participants and methods: during the period spanning between January and July 2021, a total of 21 residents training in anaesthesiology and resuscitation were included. An evaluation was carried out after the first ESP block procedure, then after the 10th and after the 20th. The main assumption is that mastery of this locoregional anaesthesia technique is obtained after achieving at least 20 ESP Block procedures. Results: all 21 residents included in the study received a score equal to or exceeding 90/100 when evaluating the 20th ESP Block procedure. There is no significant difference between the scores obtained by residents in terms of their level of practice in locoregional anaesthesia. There appears to be a significant difference in stratified analysis on the allocated block procedure when evaluating block procedure 1 and block procedure 10 (p=0.006) and (p=0.01). Conclusion: the ESP block procedure is a fast and easy-to-learn locoregional anaesthesia technique that can be fully mastered after carrying out 20 procedures.
