Enquête sur la pratique du toucher rectal chez les médecins généralistes de Basse-Normandie

Abstract : Introduction: The rectal examination is a clinical procedure well known to general practitioners. The objective of this study is to evaluate the practices of rectal examination in Basse-Normandy and to determine whether there is a link between the frequency of rectal examination and the place of touch in general medicine. Material and methods: Retrospective survey from November 2020 to March 2021. An online questionnaire collected the responses. In addition to response-by-response processing, implicative statistical analysis made it possible to establish links between all responses. Results: We received 47 responses. In the first place, the rectal examination is a gesture which remains mainly carried out and without expressed discomfort. Two networks of responses stood out. The first converges on the fact that the rectal examination remains a necessary function of the practice of the general practitioner. This network is more typical of male doctors practicing in rural areas and who have several points of convergence: they do digital rectal examinations more often, prescribe fewer additional examinations, do not entrust their patient to a specialist and think that the sense of touch in general medicine is still as frequent. The second network converges towards a shared feeling that touching tends to be reduced. He opposes the first network on the same points. It is more typical among the middle generation (between 10 and 20 years of practice), the semi-rural practice environment and among women. Conclusion: From the digital rectal examination we can distinguish two conceptions of medicine that oppose their practice of touch in general.
