État des lieux du ressenti des orthophonistes concernant la prise en soin des patients atteints de sclérose latérale amyotrophique

Abstract : Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (SLP) is a neurodegenerative pathology with a lethal outcome, requiring multidisciplinary care. The speech therapist has several missions and must constantly adapt to the patient's difficulties. We were interested in how speech therapists felt about this care. Our goal was to identify the presence or absence of apprehensions, their causes, and the means to reduce them. To do this, we distributed a survey to speech and language therapists practising in France in private practice and/or as employees. The 128 questionnaires collected enabled us to highlight the presence of numerous and varied apprehensions on the part of speech therapists. On a scale of 1 to 10, the average level of apprehension was 6/10, with 25% of people scoring above 8/10. We were able to group these apprehensions into three categories: apprehensions related to the patient; apprehensions related to the patient's family; and apprehensions related to the caregiver. Then, we statistically analyzed the impact of the expertise on the apprehensions revealing a moderate correlation between these two elements. Finally, we looked for possibilities to reduce these apprehensions. Our results show that a majority of SLPs did not spontaneously implement any measures to reduce these apprehensions. There was a significant demand for specific training (70%), as well as a need for exchanges with the other people involved with the patient (66%). Our study highlighted the emotional impact of caring for ALS patients on speech-language pathologists. It might be interesting to compare these results with other neurodegenerative diseases.
