La place des professionnels de santé dans l’incitation à l’activité physique en aquitaine : étude APAQUI

Abstract : Background: the benefits of physical activity are well established in many diseases; however most people do not achieve the recommended levels of physical activity. The promotion of this practice to a wide audience by health professionals is therefore necessary. Objectives: to determine the rate of exposure of the Aquitaine population to the encouragement to physical activity by health professionals and to study the factors associated with it. Methods: Cross-sectional study in the general population in Aquitaine. Subjects were recruited through pharmacists or a social media post. They provided online socio-demographic data, health data, physical activity advice received during the year, and their level of physical activity. The primary outcome was the reporting of an inducement to physical activity by at least one health professional in the year preceding the survey. Results: out of 721 included subjects in our study, 407 subjects (56.5%) reported having been encouraged to physical activity in the past year, including 65.1% by a relative, 38.6% by a health professional, 18.2% by a media outlet and 14% by a sports professional. The most often cited health professionals were doctors (76.4%), physiotherapists (32.5%) and dieticians (8.9%). Discussion was the most widely used form. Body mass index, depression, anxiety, asthma, low back pain, rheumatoid arthritis and/or ankylosing spondylitis and polymedication were statistically significantly associated with inducement to physical activity by a healthcare professional. Discussion: health professionals are important players in the promotion of physical activity among the population of Aquitaine. This encouragement seems to be based on an informal assessment of the patient’s level of physical activity and health condition. A more objective assessment of patients' needs and a referral to appropriate devices would certainly be of interest in terms of individual and collective health.
