Midazolam : connaissances et usages des médecins généralistes du territoire Sud Gironde

Abstract : Introduction: over the past few years, there have been new recommendations surrounding the administration of sedation at the end of life. Access to sedative practices must be accessible at home and midazolam might very soon be available in city pharmacies. Objective: the main goal is to look at the current state of understanding of midazolam and look at future utilization by GPs in the South Gironde area. Material and methods: this is a descriptive observational study using a two pronged-approach: quantitative and qualitative. A survey was sent to 140 GPs practicing in the territory between July 1St and Auguste 31ST, 2021. Results: the participation rate is 50%. The results reveal that 41.4% of GPs have received training in palliative care, 44.3% of GPs take car of an average of 3 to 4 end-of-life patients per year and 58.8% have previously performed sedation at home. A percentage of 47.6% of GPs have already used midazolam during their private practice. GPs seek to get assisted by a specialized external team for the prescription of midazolam. The main obstacles put forward when it came to the prescription of midazolam were the prescribing doctor feeling, the non-availability of nurses and the difficulties in the continuity of care and lack of training. Conclusion: even if the latest national plan aims to improve the care of end-of-life patients at home, particularity by making midazolam more accessible, prescription supervision, training of GPs and consultation with specialized teams is mandatory.
