Health-friendly landscapes: the case of hospitals. Implementing a landscape master plan in a healthcare establishment
The WHO definition of health encompasses physical, mental and social well-being, and goes beyond the mere absence of disease. 80% of health status is influenced by a range of factors known as health determinants. Understanding these determinants is essential to improving overall health and reducing inequalities. Green spaces play a fundamental role in improving mental and physical health, helping to reduce stress, stimulate the immune system and improve attention. Hospitals, in particular, can benefit from the presence of vegetation to create a calming environment for patients, staff and visitors, and facilitate the healing process. However, the strategic integration of nature into healthcare establishments is still insufficient, despite knowledge of the benefits of plants. A landscape master plan could be a solution, involving the participation of various stakeholders to create a coherent project. There is an urgent need to recognise the fundamental human need to reconnect with nature, especially as the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of natural spaces. This awareness underlines the importance of reintegrating living things into our environments to improve our well-being and prevent future public health crises.
