The woman representation in Krzysztof Kieślowski’s films
Krzysztof Kieślowski, one of Poland's leading filmmakers, is renowned for his social cinema, a
body of work denouncing the impossibility of individual fulfillment in the collective sphere. Kieślowski's
work has been the subject of a number of publications, particularly among film critics, with the work of
Positif magazine contributing to the filmmaker's reputation in France. Yet, a recurring theme in
Kieślowski's cinematography has attracted little interest to date: the representation of his female
characters.
This paper proposes to revisit Kieślowski's treatment of the female figure through a selection of three
films that punctuate the filmmaker's career: Passage souterrain (1973), Brève Histoire d'amour (1988)
and La Double Vie de Véronique (1991). This corpus selection allows us to approach Kieślowski's
career as a whole, and to follow his thematic and aesthetic evolution within the Polish
cinematography. By examining the way in which female characters are represented, staged and
written, we'll look at how the filmmaker made them subjects in their own right within his work. Both
witnesses to a failing society and guarantors of a path towards the exploration of themes of the sacred
and spiritual.
