Demystifying wine : gamification and storytelling in wine tourism product among BeNeLux customers
Abstract
Pura Alegría, a family-owned business that shows the Andalusian way of life was formed with a love for Spanish wines and a curiosity to explore authentic and less-explored winemaking regions. As the wine consumption pattern is changing rapidly, wine players have to create an innovative strategy that will capture the attention of new audiences. Pura Alegría wants to establish a modern-day wine club for BeNeLux consumers and aims to make wine more approachable and engaging through digital and narrative techniques. The research methodology uses a literature review and survey to understand the preferences and motivations of potential wine club members. The findings showed that younger consumers, who are digital natives, show a strong preference for engaging, authentic storytelling and interactive, tech-savvy engagement methods. These consumers value convenience, variety, and a sense of community, which can be effectively provided through gamified and story-driven wine club experiences. Thus, the proposed Pura Alegría Wine Club offers different membership tiers that can cater to different types of wine enthusiasts. It incorporates different gamification elements which motivate members and improve engagement whereas storytelling will humanize the brand and create a deeper emotional connection with the members. Despite the promising potential, the study also acknowledges several limitations. These include the challenge of building brand recognition for a new company, the significant investment required for implementing advanced digital techniques, and the limited generalizability of the findings beyond the BeNeLux region. Future research should expand the sample size and include diverse geographic regions to validate the findings and enhance their generalizability. Additionally, as technology evolves, more sophisticated gamification techniques and digital storytelling tools should be explored. Longitudinal studies tracking the long-term impact of these strategies on customer loyalty and brand perception are also recommended. In conclusion, the integration of gamification and storytelling in wine marketing presents a significant opportunity to attract and retain a diverse customer base, particularly among younger generations. By demystifying wine and making it a fun and engaging experience, the Pura Alegría Wine Club can foster a loyal community of wine enthusiasts, contributing to the promotion of lesser-known wine regions and supporting sustainable tourism.
