Sustainable wine tourism. Beyond the cellar door: diversified wine tourism for sustainability

Résumé

Portugal has gained a great deal of international recognition in the last few years as a must-see tourist destination. At the same time, the wine world has begun to recognize that its incredibly diverse landscape lends itself to a varied wine culture. Tourism, especially in Portugal, has the power to be a key economic force in a country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). However, it is vital to acknowledge the detriment tourism can bring to the inherent attraction of the destination. Tourism gentrification can strip the very essence of a destination and reduce it down to mass replication of unsubstantial value. The sustainability of tourism relies on the preservation of the culturally significant aspects of a destination. As wine tourism grows in appeal globally, destinations need to be savvy and incorporate diversified tourism offerings to visitors, capturing varied levels of interest. A destination management company (DMC) is one of many stakeholders that can play a vital role in the preservation and sustainability of a tourism destination. Catavino, a DMC in Porto, Portugal is deeply committed to sharing the traditions of Portugal. The thesis will investigate what diversified sustainable tourism can look like and the significance of networks in its development. While interning with Catavino, there will be an investigation of how to develop mutually beneficial partnerships with value-aligned wine and tourism professionals and DMCs. The preservation of tourism destinations requires diversified experiences, incorporating culturally significant elements, and the development of lesser-known rural regions. These elements can contribute greatly to the long-term sustainability of the niche nature of wine tourism offers.
