Seekers in Hawthorne’s tales : the artist and the scientist in « The artist of the beautiful », « Rappaccini’s daughter » and « The birthmark »

Résumé

Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) was an american author whose work is mostly composed of short stories and essays. Hawthorne wrote a lot about the influence of puritanism on american society and the power it has on people’s minds and conceptions of the world. He exposed puritan themes leading to societal issues of his time in his works of fiction, and with his vast array of characters. Among these, we can find misguided figures of perseverance, men who dedicated their lives to the realisation of their own personal ideals, not realising that their quests were doomed to fail from the instant they undertook them. This document aims to research and analyse several of these tragic characters : Aylmer from « The birthmark », Rappaccini from « Rappaccini’s daughter » and Owen Warland from « The artist of the beautiful ».
