La ville et la guerre. Valence pendant la première guerre de religion (vers 1560-vers 1563)

Abstract : In Valence, in this April 27th, 1562, the province of Dauphiné falls over entirely to the first religious war. This day there, the lieutenant général La Motte-Gondrin, the highest representative of king in the province, is killed by the Huguenots. Almost immediately the baron des Adrets, in the head of a Protestant army, seizes the city. From then on the province enters the war under the banner of Condé, to make the reformation triumph. From 1560 grave religious disorders already shook Valence. The capture of the Convent of the Cordeliers by the Huguenots of Valence in April 1560 had ended in the blood. In spite of the conciliatory attempts of the bishop Jean de Monluc, the huguenots lived under the yoke of Motte-Gondrin which made of the city its headquarters until the bloody days of April 25th, 26th and 27th, 1562. Become minority in Valence engaged beside the Protestant troops, the Catholics succeed however in maintaining good terms with their Protestant neighbours. In the heart of the storm of the first religious war, Catholics and Protestants of Valence remained welded to support their city side by side. What are thus the mechanisms which allowed this coexistence? Lack in the history of the religious wars in Dauphiné, the case of Valence does not nevertheless miss interest. This study suggests bringing a new glance on the first religious disorders which shook Valence by multiplying the angles of approach. It is thus a political and religious, social and economic study which we try to deliver here.
