La place du médecin spécialisé en médecine générale dans les organisations de solidarité internationale (OSI) médicales françaises en 2011

Abstract : Purpose: In the past few years, humanitarian medicine has entered a professionalization phase, while general medicine has become a specialty. The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of these changes on the role of general practitioners in International Solidarity Organizations (ISOs) in 2011. Materials and methods: This mixed (qualitative and quantitative) study is based on structured interviews with executives of the main French medical Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and the Red Cross. Results: For 67% of 12 ISOs included in this study, general practitioners have an important support role. 75% believe they offer specific contributions that they don't find among other specialists. For responsibilities of humanitarian doctors, 75% indicate teaching as the main activity in development missions and 83% mention a complex infectious disease among the diseases commonly treated. When ISOs compare characteristics of humanitarian doctors to those of general practitioners defined by WONCA Europe, few differences appear. Discussion: Teaching, tropical diseases, and the importance of public health are differences that distinguish these two disciplines. However, the typical characteristic of humanitarian doctors is versatility. Their main qualities are adaptability and open-mindedness. These assets of general practitioners make them essential for operating these organizations.
