Utilité d'une brochure informative sur la durée et l'intensité des douleurs périnéales en post-partum : étude randomisée

Abstract : According to ANAES, perineal pain is among the main health problem during the postpartum period. Andrews, in 2008, points out that 12% of women still have perineal pain 2 months after delivery. The main objective of the study is to show the impact of a brochure which is informative and proposing different methods to relieve perineal pain during the postpartum period, its duration and intensity. The secondary objective is to evaluate the effectiveness of non medical treatments available and patient satisfaction. This prospective two staged randomized controlled trial was fully conducted on 127 patients who had vaginal births. A group of patients received both the brochure "How to relieve perineal pain" and oral advice given by hospital midwives during their hospital stay and the other group, only the usual oral advice given by midwives. The pain assessment was done by using Numerical Rating Pain Scale and the Brief Pain Inventory. There was no significant difference between the two groups regarding duration (p=0.22) and intensity (p=0.4) of perineal pain postpartum. Patients in possession of the brochure were more likely to have used treatments to relieve their perineal pain (p=0,096) but no difference regarding the type of treatment used (p>0.05). There is no significant difference in term of patient satisfaction (p=0.29). Even if the results are not significant, it has been noted that in the brochure group a greater number of patients was completely relieved of perineal pain in less than 10 days, non-drug treatments were used instead of drug treatments and satisfaction was higher.
