Le motif du jeu dans Belle du Seigneur d'Albert Cohen

Abstract : In this memoire, we decided to study the playful dimension of Belle du Seigneur by Albert Cohen. We asked ourselves what the characters were playing at and why they were. We saw that the rules of the game, like its aims, were many. From animalizing representation to dirge, from defence to the protection of tragedy throught seduction, means and ends follow each other but are not like. Then, we tried to find a unifying theme which appeared to be the movement of games played one after the other in the novel. This movement is the one which opens up to potentiality and increases the creative freedom of such actors as Ariane, Solal Adrien Deume, Mangeclous or Isolde. By ringing, dancing, vociferating, mimicking the climber's walk or dressing up as an old Jew, all of them are expressing in their own way a most inventive connection to the world which makes them set the stage, when all is said and done, becoming monarchs of fiction who win a new existence in tales and legends.
