Analyse des caractéristiques techniques et fonctionnelles des élevages de porcs biologiques

Abstract : Few studies exist on the technical and functional characterization of organic pig farms. The French institute for the pig and pork industry has attempted to answer several questions: what are the major trends in the current French organic pig farms? Are there farms more efficient than others? If so, what recommendations can be drawn from their study, which may improve the overall production of organic pigs? This study is based on data from 40 French farmers and aims to establish an objective inventory of the production. Analyzes highlighted four major trends in organic pig production: recently converted farms, with little independence and little specialisation; specialized farms, with little independence due to farm's constraints; independent farms, often specialized; unspecialized farms, adapting to the constraints of their farms to be as independent as possible. This study concluded that the farrow to finish units, making food on the farm, seem to be the type of farming system the less subjected to the market's fluctuations and the more stable over the long term. A more specific analysis of the technical results has lead to recommendations on practices. Thus, the success of organic pig farms is based on three key points: the control of housing, feeding and health status. These overall results remain to be clarified by a more detailed study of the economic performances and profitability of organic pig farms.
