La belle et la bête : la bête, un monstre ?

Abstract : This research work touches on children's litterature through Beauty and the Beast by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont. Having shown the universality of this tale and its existence in official documents, it shall be possible to question the figure of the Beast and to underscore its ambiguous character. This report partially explores the stereotype of the Beast which appears like a humanized lion in the French version and, on the other hand, the multitude of the Beast's representations throughout the world. This leads to drawing parallels between each country's culture and the portrayal of the Beast. Through this analysis, it was shown that there does not exist a united portrait of the Beast and that it depends on geography and on collective memory. In the proposed sequences children were asked to create their own representation without taking into account external images such as those in books or movies. Around thirty beasts were proposed, not a single being superior to the other. This has been carried out in different cultures to better understand the French version of Beauty and the Beast. This séquence has links two disciplines: literature and visual arts. This link is made by illustrating the story. This was made possible by reading the tale which lead to the sreation of a resume as depicted in the illustrations. Pictures werethe pupils' means of creating their own mental images before putting them into words. This has lead to a collective nterpretation of the story of Beauty and the Beast.
