Le robot mobile : une alternative innovante afin de concilier traite robotisée et système de production de lait avec pâturage

Abstract : Automatisation of milking, main obligation of dairy farming, has been increasingly developing over the past twenty years due to the introduction of automatic milking systems (AMS) on the market. Milkings are distributed over 24h. The access to the robot has to be permanent. In order to ease cow traffic, farmers tend to reduce the proportion of pasture in the diet of dairy cows, or eliminate it completely, especially because of land fragmentation (road to cross, isolated plots). However, grazing appears to be essential for economic, environmental and social reasons. To overcome the lack of accessibility of grasslands, Trévarez experimental station (located in Western France) built a mobile milking robot prototype to increase the grazable area from 0,20 up to 0,40 hectares per cow. This project takes part to the European project Autograssmilk aiming to optimize the combination between robotic milking and grazing. Transfer of the mobile unit from its winter site to its summer site occured for the first time in 2014. After an adjustment period, cows have learned to traffic in 2 paddocks per 24h permitted by the transfer of the 3-way drafting gate. The milking frequency reached 1.8 milkings per cow per day with a milk yield of 20 kg per cow per day on average. Approximately 1.6 t of DM of grazed grass has already been valued in seven months. Milk production seems to depend more on the quality of available grass than on variations in milking frequency. The extra cost of mobility remains high despite of the consequent feed cost decrease.
