Entre représentations et réalités quotidiennes : l’ouverture politique et économique de Cuba dans un nouveau contexte géopolitique

Abstract : On 19th April 2018, Cuba was the scene of an historic event: after 60 years of reign of the Castro brothers on the communist island, a new President of the Republic arrived at the head of the State: Miguel Díaz-Canel, 58 years old. It has been the opportunity to revive speculations about the future of the island, presented since the 1990s as an anachronistic relic of the cold war, intended to make its transition to a liberal democracy. This short thesis aims to question the evolution of the Castro regime through the prism of representations (Cuban leaders, the Western press, or the Cuban population) and their confrontation with the daily reality on the largest island of the Caribbean Sea. The highlight of this approach is a geopolitical analysis of the corn trade between France and Cuba, a strategic sector for a country far from being self-sufficient, thanks to numerous interviews conducted both in Havana and in the Hexagone.
