Grossesse et tabac : l’accompagnement au sevrage des femmes enceintes fumeuses

Abstract : Active an passive smoking during pregnancy, with its many consequences for mother and child’s health, is a serious public health issue. Since 2010, the situation of smoking during pregnancy has not progressed : although most of women manage to stop smoking in the early stages of pregnancy, 17% of prenant women report smoking daily in the third trimester of their pregnancy. A qualitative research conducted in the maternity ward of the hospital complex Cochin in Paris, was interested in the reasons for a non-cessation of smoking during pregnancy. Over this study, 15 women, who had smoked at least until the third trimester of pregnancy or had stopped smoking during their pregnancy, were questioned during semi-directional and individual interviews, over their hospitalization in the maternity ward. The results obtained contributed to highlight various reasons accounting for the difficulty to take care of these patients. Smoking pregnant women wishing to give up their consumption are not always informed of the possibilities available to them, and wish for being more guided and advised. In addition, health professionals taking charge of them during pregnancy and postpartum do not systematically use the tools available to detect and assess addiction, as well as the existing therapies to guide the smoking withdrawal of their patients. A general awareness is necessary to ensure a thorough and appropriate care of smoking pregnant women during their pregnancy and the postnatal period.
