L'éveil aux langues à l'école primaire

Abstract : During nearly three months a language awareness experiment was carried out in a class composed of twenty-one third year primary school pupils, in order to analyze the impact on pupils’ openness to linguistic and cultural diversity. Three main tools have been used so as to define if the experiment had had the expected effects. The longitudinal approach, estimating as a first step the students’ conceptions before and after the project as well as the use of an observation grid and the analysis of files filled in by pupils showed a development of positive attitudes among students towards the diversity of the outside world. However, this study pointed out that sessions only had little immediate impact on the range of languages pupils would like to discover. First, this essay presents the theoretical framework, detailing in particular the concept of language awareness ’evolution over time and especially the various projects conducted abroad and in France. Second, the carried out experiment is described and analyzed. Following these units, a conclusion and perspectives related to this topic are proposed.
