L’expérience pédagogique et esthétique des écoles de danse Duncan (1904-1935) : transmission et incorporation de l’idéal d’un corps jeune, féminin et en mouvement

Abstract : This research focuses on the pedagogical work created by the american dancer Isadora Duncan and her sister Elizabeth Duncan, in their dance schools, in France and Germany, from 1904 to 1935. This study, at the crossroads of history, art history, dance, gender, and thanks to the use of a very varied corpus of sources composed of autobiographical writings, poetic texts, letters, administrative documents in German, French and English as well as numerous photographs and some drawings, aims to reconstruct the experiences of these young students, as well as the speeches and representations surrounding their schooling. We analyze how their female bodies are shaped, modified, improved by Isadora Duncan's idealistic aesthetics and by the practice of a so-called "free" dance. Placed in boarding schools from the age of five to seventeen, these students are forming an exceptional group isolated and partially excluded from society. During a period of bodies knowledge renewal in Europe and under the Germanic influence of Lebensreform, these dance schools become then place of scientific, aesthetic and moral new experimentations and bodies of the students their object. The latter are trained by the practice of physical education, sanitized by an outdoor life and an excessive hygiene, magnified by an incorporation of ancient Greek aesthetics and an observation of nature’s movement. Then, passing from a state of exclusion to the one of overexposure during public performances proving their abilities, the students become the means of transmitting Isadora Duncan's artistic ideals but also of spreading a new model of corporeality : that of a young female body, bared and in movement.
