Abstract : Factors influencing the participation to the outpatient pulmonary rehabilitation program of the Hillot center among chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients of southwest France. Background: COPD is a major cause of morbidity and mortality around the world. Pulmonary rehabilitation is its most effective treatment in the long term. However, studies show that it’s uderused. The aim of our study was to identify the factors caracterizing the patients with COPD who attended an outpatient pulmonary rehabilitation program. Methods: we performed a restrospective descriptive study of 61 patients with COPD who attended the outpatient pulmonary rehabilitation program of the Hillot center in Pessac. Results: the patients who were the most likely to participate in the program where those who were : of female gender, retired, with a family support system, living near the center, supported by a long duration affection, not practicing any physical activity, followed regularly by a pneumologist, with a stable stage III or IV COPD, with at least grade 2 dyspnea, weaned of smoking, with at least one comorbidity. The doctors who referred these patients were mostly pulmonologists, close to the rehabilitation center. 54.1% of patients had completed the program and 43.4% of the patients who had interruped it, did it for personal reasons. Conclusion: to improve the use of pulmonary rehabilitation, it is necessary to target the patients who are less likely to participate to the program and above all, improve the prescription by general practitioners who remain the least prescribers of pulmonary rehabilitation.
