Évolution de l’image corporelle jusqu’à 5 ans après chirurgie bariatrique chez 61 patients suivis au Centre Spécialisé de l’Obésité du CHU de Bordeaux

Abstract : In obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery, there appears to be an improvement in body image in the first few months after surgery. Data are lacking as to its evolution away from surgery. The literature is also shared as to the relationship between weight loss and improved body image. We conducted a 5-year observational cohort study evaluating the responses of 61 patients followed at the CSO of the Bordeaux University Hospital. The aim was to evaluate the responses to the MBSRQ-AS questionnaire in its various dimensions (satisfaction with its appearance in a global manner and for different areas of the body, investment in appearance, concern for overweight and self-classified weight) before surgery, between 1 and 3 months, 6 and 9 months, 12 and 18 months and 5 years after surgery. We observed an overall improvement in the results obtained on the questionnaire, reflecting an improvement in body image until the evaluation performed between 12 and 18 months after bariatric surgery compared to the assessment performed before surgery. At 5 years postoperatively, there was a degradation of the scores without reaching the score obtained preoperatively. Concern about overweight did not seem to be changed throughout the followup. There was a positive correlation between weight loss and the MBSRQ-AS “satisfaction with appearance” dimension at each assessment. The dimensions "investment in appearance", "concern for overweight" and "self-classified weight" were not correlated with weight loss. Body image appears to be improved by bariatric surgery but only temporarily. Other studies, using specific bariatric surgery questionnaires such as BODY-Q, would help to better understand this evolution over time.
