Vendeurs de vape dans l'accompagnement des fumeurs. Étude qualitative sur de potentiels acteurs de santé publique

Abstract : Introduction: the Haut Conseil de la Santé Publique recognized the e-cigarette, in an exclusive usage, as a tool for reducing the risks. It is the favourite tobacco cessation technique among French people: e-cigarette sellers are in the front line. How e-cigarette vendors are apprehending their role in supporting smokers? Method: qualitative study by semi-structured interviews with e-cigarette sellers and direct observations in the shops. Grounded theory method analysis. Triangulation. Results: 15 interviews located in the Basque country, Béarn and Landes, from June 2018 to August 2019. The seller wears many hats: caregiver, technician and trader. He guarantees a comfortable and satisfying tobacco cessation by an appropriate physical substitute, a functional equipment and a pleasure to consume. With his strong experience, he recognizes the customer profile and identifies, foresees and takes care of any disruptive factors in his vaping progression. Jeopardised by the tobacco industry, the sellers are defending their independence, and call for more recognition and collaboration. Discussion: by assisting the smoker toward vaping, the salesperson uses his roles of seller and e-cigarette user,(ex-)smoker. This position allows him to refine his knowledge backed by experience and attract many smokers to the shops. It leads to a heterogeneity of the service, which is based on a subjective expertise. The regulating role of the seller for non-smokers, dual users (both e-cigarettes and tobacco) or long-term e-cigarette users, has yet to be defined. Conclusion: the study highlights the various aspects, forces and weaknesses, of sellers in assisting the smokers. It would be worth considering how to value their action in reducing the risks related to smoking.
