Étude et valorisation du patrimoine industriel portuaire de Brest : l'activité de la poulierie de l'arsenal entre la fin du XVIIIe et la fin du XIXe siècle

Abstract : Studying the know-how of the pulley makers of the arsenal of Brest between 1670 and 1860 is not an easy task. A multitude of parameters have to be taken into account, including their tools, the machine tools used to manufacture the various components that make up a pulley, but also the evolution in time and space of the place of production. Despite being seemingly insignificant objects on a ship because of their presence in large numbers, pulleys make navigation possible. This study is based on methodologies developed within the François Viète centre, as well as on a methodology taken from modern industry and adapted for the study of pulley workshops between the end of the 18th century and 1860. It raises the question of the valorisation of a lost industrial heritage, the pulley workshop, a relatively unknown production unit of the Brest arsenal, and questions the gaps in the history of the arsenal of Brest, particularly in the area around the Tonnellerie cove.
