Affiches standardisées ou personnalisées en salle d'attente des cabinets médicaux : essai contrôlé randomisé par clusters

Abstract : Background: posters are one of the most common ways of communication used in general practice waiting rooms. Considering an ambiguous literature about its efficiency, a personalized poster at the physician office with photography was contemplated. Our study is part of a project called "LAST project", aiming to promote smoking cessation in primary care. The objective is to measure a difference in memorizing between a standard poster and a customized one. Methods: clusters randomized controlled trial. Two types of posters were produced: a standard and a customized one. They were displayed alternately on the wall of the waiting rooms. The order of display was randomized. The patients, volunteers and over the age of 18, who saw a doctor during the study’s duration were included. The difference on memorizing a message between a standard and customized poster was measured by hetero-evaluation with a questionnaire. Results: 268 patients were included in 5 physician offices between December 2019 and January 2020 in Gironde. 120 patients in the group of the standard posters and 148 in the group of customized ones. 43,92% of the patients exposed to the customized poster and 20,83% of the patients exposed to the standard poster remembered the poster message. The factors seeming to increase the memorization of the message are the low number of people on the photography, the waiting time increased and, to a lesser extent, the low amount of posters hanged up in the waiting room. Conclusion: the difference is statistically significant (p=0,0001). Personalizing the poster with a picture of the professional could be an alternative, reinforcing the memorizing of the messages delivered in the waiting room.
