L’opposition entre l’individualité des amants courtois et la collectivité de la cour dans les romans du XIIe siècle

Abstract : This thesis aims to outline a broad vision of a common clash of 12th century novels, opposing a court’s community and its adulterous lovers’ individuality. Whether it is the amorous alienation of the Tristans in French verse, the temporary clandestinity of Chrétien de Troyes’ Cligès, or the glorification of clandestinity seen in Le Chevalier à la Charrette, each text studied in this thesis deals with the essential conflict of the 12th century’s amorous rhetoric: the clash between collectivity and individuality. This conflict exists mainly because the adulterous lovers, while loving themselves sinfully, are also paradoxically the most talented members of the court they outrage. Despite their anchoring in the aristocratic society of the 12th century, the texts studied in this work are of those whose themes are as simple as timeless. They are pioneers of the tension between collectivity and particularity developed by French Romanticism, as well as of all forms of literature which turns human feelings into a piece of art.
