Connaissance de la postvention par les médecins généralistes et leur prise en charge de l’entourage d’un suicidé

Abstract : Background: In France, 220,000 people are bereaved because of the suicide of a loved-one each year, and 22% of the population is exposed to the suicide of a loved-one in their lifetime. The effect of such a traumatic event justifies a specific management by postvention. As a family practitioner, the general practitioner is the preferred intermediary for these grieving people. Aim: How do general practitioners deal with these bereaved ones? Method: A qualitative study was conducted through half- structured interviews with general practitioners. The verbatim was analyzed both horizontally and vertically. Results: None of the omnipractitioners interviewed heard about the postvention, but they considered doing it intuitively. As a primary care provider and care coordinator, they knuckled down to respond to the needs of their patient in three different fields: psychological, social and in the somatic and psychiatric complications possibly involved. Being familiar with their patients allowed the general practitioners to have a personnalized management of these grieving patients, but it gives rise to another problematic: the family practitioner might himself be bereaved of the suicide of his patient like a relative one and thus be in the questioning, misunderstanding, guilt and emotional pain. Conclusion: It would therefore seems necessary to provide support and listening to family practitioners within the postvention. The general practitioners also wished they could lean on a professional psycho-psychiatric easily reachable and communicating.
