Étude préliminaire d’un questionnaire d’évaluation de l’estime de soi (QESD) : comparaison des scores à ce questionnaire entre des enfants dyslexiques et des enfants normolecteurs scolarisés en CM1/CM2

Abstract : Self-concept allows to assess one’s physical characteristics, behaviours, skills and performances. Concerning child-readers with dyslexia, self-concept is all the more important because it influences global development, learnings and mental health. There is no French scale that allows to evaluate self-concept in the population of dyslexic children. Thus, we created a self-concept evaluation scale for dyslexic children in the 5th and 6th grade (QESD) in order to compare scores to this scale between a group of 15 dyslexic child-readers (LD) and a group of 23 normal readers (NL). Children were distributed in both groups after a pretest (reading of a significant and non-significant text, reading of frequent and less frequent regular, irregular words and non-words, a sentence dictation and an oral comprehension task). Results didn’t show any significant difference regardless of the field considerated. However, descriptive analysis showed lower averages for the “LD” group concerning the fields “importance of the domains” with an average of 37,4/56 against 40,7/56 for the « NL » group, « academic » with an average of 38,2/60 against 41/60, “behaviour” with an average of 16/24 against 17,8/24, and “global” with an average of 18/24 against 18,4/24. One of the study’s limitations is that the population sample wasn’t sufficient. Moreover, one out of the two schools that were supposed to participate in the “NL” group had to close several times because of the pandemic and cancelled its participation to the study. More satisfying results could be obtained with a bigger population sample that would better represent both normal children reader’s population and dyslexic child-reader’s population.
