La sorcellerie au XVIIe siècle : importance et évolution du phénomène de sorcellerie en France et en Angleterre à travers l'étude de deux traités de démonologie

Abstract : From the end of the Middle Age, Demonology treaties had great importance during the European witchcraft trials. Written either by judges or theologians, the treaties had a decisive role during the witch-hunts of the 17th century. This essay focuses on two demonology treaties: La Démolâtrie (Nicolas Remy, 1595) and The Discovery of Witches (Matthew Hopkins, 1645). Through the study of those two books, we will see the evolution of the perception of witchcraft during the 17th century and its decriminalisation in both France and England. We will also study the role played by the demonologists and their writings throughout this period.
