Le féminisme dans l’œuvre d’Agnès Varda : une question politique et cinématographique

Abstract : “I tried to be a joyful feminist, but I was very angry”, stated director Agnès Varda in her 2008 film The Beaches of Agnès (Les plages d’Agnès). This thesis aims to analyze the influence of her feminism on her films.
How does Varda design works that respond to a politics of cinematic form suitable to embody her feminist engagement? I attempt to answer this question by relying on multiple perspectives : simultaneously, aesthetical – with a very precise analytical approach –, but also historical and cultural – in order to link her work to the French feminist movements of the 1970’s that she associated with – and finally, feminist. The first chapter focuses on the politicization of her films, starting in the 1960’s, where she opens up a political gap that allows for a more explicit assertion of her feminism by providing a relay on the screen. The second chapter examines the disruptions of visual norms suggested by Varda’s work, thanks to a triple re-articulation of the gaze that participates in the development of a politics of discursive formations. Finally, the third chapter sheds light on the filmmaker’s perpetual search for a properly cinematographic and personal language, relying more on the forms than on the script, which she names cinécriture (“cinema-writing”). It is this authentic initiative that allows for Agnès Varda’s feminism to be turned into a cinematic political matter.
