Writing the identity in becoming according to Søren Kierkegaard and Virginia Woolf
Often absent from philosophical studies, Kierkegaard's writing displays the discovery of an
uncharted path to questioning and expressing a personal identity in becoming. This paper presents
itself as an imaginary exchange between K and W to ponder on the rupture of the theory of existence
through the lens of time. Staying myself through the flow of time, always becoming and meeting the
self, is the eternal back and forth between interiority and becoming, a motion imitated by Kierkegaard
in his works. Interiority can not be taught, it is my own and only truth. The meeting of the self is the
rupture in time, an opening through which I become and keep on maintaining the self as time goes.
This paper considers non-philosophy and fiction as ways of expressing and manifesting life as real
and worn through. Existence is an entity which cannot be deciphered, and by communicating my
existence I throw myself towards a meaning which seems absent at first sight. The meaning unfolds
itself in becoming. This dialogue between authors unveils the unexpressable. The shape taken by
existence must resemble the form in which it is communicated. Woolf’s stream of consciousness finds
an echo in Kierkegaard’s pseudonyms. Both authors let the individual speak in order to translate a
variety of life experienced as becoming a self, a subjectivity. They also urge us to listen. This
exchange between theory and fiction, between philosophy and literature, demonstrates how nontheory tries to capture the slippery time of subjective consciousness.
