Face à la polémique des parabens, la cosmétique bio est-elle la bonne alternative ?

Abstract : For the last ten years, petrochemical based preservatives found in cosmetic products have been the centre of a debate. Parabens have been used since 1920 as preservatives in cosmetic products for their broad antimicrobial action and low toxicity. The controversy started in 2004 following a study by professor Darbre : parabens could have an oestrogenic activity and be linked to the formation and development of breast tumours. Alternative types of preservatives have since been used : physical alternatives such as new packaging and chemical alternatives such as preservatives found in nature. Laboratories have therefore followed the trend to match consumers' demand by offering organic cosmetic products. These cosmetics are regulated by numerous labels which are not always clear. An European harmonisation of these labels should be implemented to make consumer's understanding easier.
