Désignateurs et renvois

Abstract : The goal of the work presented here is to reveal the semantic structure of designators like proper names or definite descriptions. In particular, that means we have to answer this question: "How a designator is referring ?". More precisely, this study is a critical analysis of various semantic systems or conceptions coming from analytic philosophy (Mill, Frege, Russell, Kripke, Kaplan or Donnellan for example) and has the debate between direct reference and descriptivism as its main axis. The cognitive aspect of referring ways yet is not ignored but is studied more briefly and only as an introduction. The analysis of the different theories allows us to unearth different modes of reference, the presuppositions that stand behind and the consequences they lead to. Thus are exposed the tensions between different conceptions as well as their inner problems. Being only the preparation of a coming study, this work doesn't claim to be exhaustive and brings no answer to the problem presented but gives some light on the matter and indicates some ways which can be explored afterwards.
