La réutilisation d'une ancienne emprise de voie ferrée pour des transports nationaux, régionaux et urbains à Addis-Abeba

Abstract : In the context of a booming city that faces to rapid urban sprawl and traffic congestion, Addis Ababa, capital city of Ethiopia, is about to become a polycentric city. Its strategic planning aims to develop secondary cities along urban corridors, with transport as a backbone of the new urbanization. That is the case of south corridor where Kality, located at 15 km from downtown will become a future secondary center. Thus, there is a necessity to improve connection between the center of Addis and its outskirt through the development of relevant public transport. The existing of the old rail track that was linked Addis to Djibouti should be dedicated for national and commuting trains and for MRT (Mass Rapid Transit). It could be reused in order to complete the LRT line under construction and to respond to the future mass transport demand. Reusing this right of way is also obvious regarding several projects that will be implemented in the south corridor and this is a way to reach the long run vision of the city. The success of the rail track project will depend on its integration into urban surroundings and the involvement of different stakeholders on this part of the rail ways starting from Legehar (old railway station in the center of Addis) to Kality center (regional bus terminal as south gateway of the city) .
