L’institutionnalisation du temple dans la République Populaire de Chine : nouvelles relations entre le bouddhisme Han et l’État depuis 1982

Abstract : In 1978, a vast program of reforms was launched by the government of the Chinese Popular Republic, which deeply changed Chinese society. One of the consequences of the “Reform and Opening-up” (gaige kaifang, 改革开放) was a certain loosening of political pressure on private affairs. In this context, the attitude of the State towards religions evolved from the repressive policies set up during the Maoist period to a strategy of accommodation. Thus, by the 1980s, the relationship between the political authority and religions was redefined, which was met a by a resurfacing of religious behavior. Han Buddhism has been at forefront of this phenomenon, having gained an immense popularity amongst the Chinese population. However, all these changes have been strongly controlled by the State. In this political science thesis, we will explore the process of institutionalization that Han Buddhism has gone through in the last decades. We will first study the institutional dynamics that determine the broad context of the relationship between this religion and the State. We will then examine the formal frame the State has drawn up to control religious activity. We will finally see how these elements have defined a specific model for the Buddhist temple, one that is both modern and touristic.
