Redéfinition de l’éducation et de l’identité dans Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, de Lewis Carroll

Abstract : Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is a book that has been widely studied, because it tackles numerous issues that are universal and timeless. Among other major themes, Lewis Carroll depicts the colorful and original story of a little girl who, through the world of dreams, walks through difficulty before finally fulfilling herself and reaching identity construction. After her voyage and the ‘curious’ episodes that occur - ‘curious’ being a word that is frequently used in the course of the story - Alice is not completely changed, but she is not completely the same either: Wonderland has allowed her to understand a certain number of aspects related to her personality, her abilities, in other words: her identity. This research work has determined as an objective to highlight the relations and correlations that can be established between this notion of identity definition and construction, and the theme of education, which plays a major role in the course of the story. Indeed, theoretical education on the one hand, and experimental or ‘practical’ education on the other hand, strongly contribute in helping Alice evolve, giving her a sense of unity and understanding the world around her. These two types of education, each in their own way, influence the perception that Alice has of herself as well as of her environment and therefore constitute an essential element of her adventures in Wonderland.
