Évaluation de l’état d’épuisement professionnel des secrétaires médicales travaillant en cabinet de médecine générale en Charente-Maritime

Abstract : Background and purpose: general practice secretaries encounter many difficulties at work. The main objective of our study was to assess the burnout state of general practice secretaries working in Charente-Maritime. Our secondary objectives were, in particular, to investigate the factors associated with high level of burnout. Method: we contacted the secretaries by phone. An online questionnaire was sent to them, including the French version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). It also collected the socio-demographic data concerning secretaries, information on their working conditions, the professional environment in the office, stress, their desire for career change as well as their opinion on the causes of burnout. The responses were anonymous. Results: 111 secretaries responded (response rate of 69.4%). 40.5% of secretaries had a high level of burnout corresponding to at least one of the components of burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, personal accomplishment). 4.5% of secretaries had an impairment of all 3 components. A high level of burnout was significantly associated with the seniority of secretaries, the frequency of stress in relation to patients, the frequency of stress experienced and the desire for career change. Conclusion: general practice secretaries may be at risk of burnout. It is important to find ways to diagnose and prevent it by promoting communication between doctor and secretaries, offering training in call management or practice exchange groups between others secretaries.
