Master Thesis

Dissection de l’esprit et esthétique de l’écriture : étude de quelques folies victoriennes

Abstract : This dissertation aims to understand the motif of madness and its application in creating, and later re-inventing Gothic fiction. The selected corpus of works features four canonical Gothic novels (Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, The Picture of Dorian Gray) which will allow us to cover the whole Victorian era and to go from the tormented moorland to the intoxicating metropolis: we will indeed start our analysis with the pathogenic exterior world. Later, we will study to what extent the architecture of the Gothic mansion endeavours to dissect the spirit through language. The liminality of the madman, caught between inclusion and exclusion as per theorised by Foucault, will be reflected in these stories where the seclusion also aims at confining the sick spirit. Lastly, we will see in which way the Gothic monster represents both the excesses of a sociopathic science and the grotesque of a body that has also been contaminated by madness.
