Metamorphosis of the maiden: looks and voices (Ovid, Andersen and Lewis Carroll)
Metamorphosis. In the first century of our era, the Latin poet Ovid coined this new word to
designate an ancient and essential notion. At the heart of many myths in all civilizations,
metamorphosis touches the sacred at the same time as it resides in the banality of everyday life.
Plants, animals, humans... everything changes.
Among all the possible transformations, we have chosen to focus on the metamorphosis of the
maiden. A figure of ephemerality and hybridity, no longer quite a child but not yet fully a woman, the
maiden is indeed predisposed to metamorphosis. As a prisoner of a body to which she is too often
reduced by the gaze of the other, the maiden must assert herself as a singular subject, succeed in
finding and making her own voice heard.
Through the texts of Ovid (The Metamorphoses), H. C. Andersen (The Little Mermaid) and Lewis
Carroll (Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland), we will question the way in which the female figures of
childhood go through this experience of disempowerment that constitutes metamorphosis.
